Autumn 11
Do you need to understand the key trends in Streetwear for Autumn 11?
The female streetwear shopper almost turned her back on the branded market amid the rise of the cheap fast-fashion chains such as Primark and New Look. However, fashion as we know is cyclical and a consumer rebellion against throwaway fashion appears to be bubbling under the surface among the teenage contingent.
This is good news for the streetwear market and is in part down to hit Channel 4 show Skins and female hip-hop artists such as Nicki Minaj and Jessie J breaking into the music mainstream with their glamorous take on ghetto culture and style. Their fresh looks have kick-started a demand for bright, loud, don’t give-a-damn product with a tough but sexy twist, which brands such as Criminal Damage are serving up with aplomb.
For men, streetwear has become increasingly sophisticated and is taking more direction from contemporary menswear than ever before. Product has smartened up for Autumn 11 – take for example thick, high-quality sweats cut and sewn into sleek lines, performance-led windcheaters and chunky shawl-neck and native American-inspired knits in refined and clever designs.
As with mainstream meanswear, streetwear sales for Autumn 11 look set to be dominated by outwear, and high-quality, down-filled and padded jackets are a must. Varsity jackets inject a quirky twist and will hit the mainstream after directional indies backed them for Autumn 10.
Keep an eye out for rip-and-repair denim styles, which offer a more distressed look. The tapered leg jean is key, as are chinos.
